What Is Checked During an MOT Test?

At Malling Repair Service , we follow strict DVSA guidelines to ensure every aspect of your vehicle is thoroughly inspected. Here’s a detailed overview of what our MOT test includes:

Body and Vehicle Structure

Our technicians inspect the body and structure of your vehicle for excessive corrosion, damage, or sharp edges that could pose a safety risk. This ensures your vehicle remains safe for all road users.

Exhaust Emissions

We verify that your vehicle’s exhaust emissions comply with the legal standards based on its age and fuel type. Ensuring low emissions not only helps you pass the MOT but also contributes to a cleaner environment.

Towbars

Towbars are checked for secure installation and good condition. We also ensure the 13-pin electrical socket is fully operational, and that the speedometer and engine mountings are functioning correctly.

Tyres and Wheels

Tyres and wheels are inspected for their condition, size, type, tread depth, and overall security. For vehicles registered after 2012, we also test the tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) for proper functionality.

Brakes

Brakes are inspected for efficiency, performance, and condition, including the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC). Warning lights for ABS, ESC, and electronic park brakes are also checked.

Seatbelts and Airbags

Our MOT test ensures all seatbelts are securely fitted, functional, and in good condition. We also check dashboard warning lights for airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, and load limiters to ensure they’re operating as intended.

Diesel Vehicles

Diesel vehicles undergo a smoke test to ensure compliance with emissions standards. To avoid potential issues, we recommend regular maintenance, including timely camshaft drive belt replacement.

Fuel System

The fuel system is examined for leaks, secure fittings, and a properly sealing fuel cap. Our team ensures everything is in optimal condition for safety and performance.

Doors and Bonnet

Doors are checked for secure latching and smooth operation, while the bonnet is inspected to confirm it closes securely.

Exhaust System

We ensure your exhaust system is secure, complete, and free from leaks or excessive noise. If a catalytic converter was fitted as standard, it must be present and functional.

Seats and Mirrors

Seats are inspected to ensure they’re securely fitted and adjustable where necessary. Mirrors are checked for condition, secure attachment, and compliance with minimum requirements.

Lights & Electrical Systems

All lights, including headlights, brake lights, and indicators, are tested for functionality, condition, and proper alignment. Electrical systems, including visible wiring and the battery, are also thoroughly checked.

Steering & Suspension

The steering and suspension systems are assessed for condition, operation, and inappropriate modifications. Dashboard warning lights for electronic power steering and steering locks are also inspected.

Vehicle Identification No.

Vehicles manufactured after August 1980 must display a single, clear VIN, which is verified during the MOT.

Wipers, Washers, and Windscreen

We check that wipers and washers are fully operational to ensure clear visibility. The windscreen is inspected for cracks or damage that might obstruct the driver’s view.

Major Services We Offer

What do I need to take with me?

Please bring your vehicle log book so the technician can stamp it after completing the service. Although not mandatory, a service stamp in your log book for each service can enhance your car’s resale value and reassure potential buyers that the vehicle has been well maintained. Additionally, if you’re booking a full service, remember to bring your locking wheel nut key so the technician can perform a thorough wheel-off brake check.

How often should you service your car?

As a general rule of thumb it is recommended that your car receives a full service every 12,000 miles or every 12 months – whichever comes sooner.

More general check ups, such as our Engine Oil and Filter Change and Interim Servicing options, are also available to ensure your vehicle is kept in the best possible condition. We also provide manufacturer servicing for all major makes and models of vehicle using official manufacturer service schedules to determine when your next service is due and the type of service required.

Service Type Service Interval
Interim Service Every 6 months or 6,000 miles (whichever comes first)
Full Service Every 12 months or 12,000 miles (whichever comes first)
Manufacturer Service As per manufacturer service schedule

More information on which service is right for your driving habits and vehicle’s age can be found here.
Regular servicing can help to keep your car running smoothly and identify potential problems early on, reducing the risk of more serious and costly problems in the future. Most importantly, regular car servicing is a fundamental step in helping to keep you and your loved ones safe on the roads.

WHEN IS MY MOT TEST DUE?

To find out when your MOT is due, you have several options. Firstly, you can check your most recent MOT certificate, which should display the date of the next MOT test. Some garages also provide windshield stickers indicating the next MOT due date. Alternatively, you can use online resources such as the official UK government website, GOV.UK MOT check, where you can enter your vehicle’s registration number to retrieve the MOT due date.

Additionally, if you typically use a specific garage for your MOT, they may have records and can remind you when it’s due. Staying informed about your MOT due date helps ensure your vehicle remains safe and legal to drive on the road.

What is An MOT Test?

The MOT Test is an annual check that must be done according to the strict rules set by the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency). The test is performed to identify if your car is safe to drive on a public highway and if it is fit for its purpose. As part of the MOT test, the lights, tyres, seatbelts, suspension, and pollution are just a few of the safety features checked. The only place that can do a MOT Test is a garage that has been cleared by the DVSA and hires DVSA approved vehicle examiners (MOT Testers).

Important: Malling Repair Service is a DVSA Approved Garage that offers you an MOT Test in Foster St, Maidstone for your car, van or motorcycle.

While your car is being tested for its MOT, the tester will check to make sure it is safe to drive. It will pass the MOT Test if it is, and it will fail the test if it is not. It’s important to know that the MOT Test is not the same as getting your car serviced. The MOT test doesn’t check the car’s mechanical health or wear. It only checks to see if your car is in better shape and works better than a certain base level. Also, a MOT test doesn’t show how good a car is in general; it only looks at how it was on the day of the test.
